About the Author
Guillermo del Toro is one of the most creative and visionary artists of his generation whose distinctive style is showcased through his work as a filmmaker, screenwriter, producer and author. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, del Toro first gained worldwide recognition for the 1993 Mexican-American co-production "Cronos," a supernatural horror film. In 2004, del Toro directed and co-wrote the action-adventure sci-fi thriller "Hellboy" starring Ron Perlman in the title role. Del Toro earned international acclaim as the director, writer and producer of the 2006 fantasy drama "Pan's Labyrinth." In all, the film garnered more than 40 international awards and appeared on more than 35 critics' lists of the year's best films. In 2013, del Toro wrote and directed the epic sci-fi action-adventure "Pacific Rim" starring Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba, which has grossed over $400 million worldwide.
Del Toro has also turned his attention to publishing. With novelist Chuck Hogan, he co-authored the vampire horror novel "The Strain," which was published in June 2009 by William Morrow. They have since collaborated on "The Fall" and "The Night Eternal" which make up "The Strain Trilogy." All three books debuted as The New York Times top-ten bestsellers. Book Review: Trollhunters (Trollhunters #1)

The book begins with two young boys playing on bikes after one’s birthday party in 1969. Jack just turned 13 and he and his younger brother, Jimbo, are playing the hero and mad scientist when Jack vanishes beneath a bridge, the only evidence, his new bike bent and broken. Jim sees something that cannot be real and he runs home in fear. Years later, Jim is grown up and works for a electronics firm and what he saw that evening in ’69 has him living in fear still, locking the house with a series f locks on the doors and metal shutters that lock down the windows. So nothing can get in. Except his teenage son will discover his father is not crazy and that monsters are real—not existing in closets, but able to come up from below. That San Bernardino, California has an underground city of trolls.
It’s hard enough being a teenager in the 21st century, with a bully who is also a football and basketball champ, the Math teacher making your life hell, and the new girl in the school from the British Isles makes your heart beat fast. So when Jim Junior and his best friend, Tubby find out trolls are real and not all are evil, but yet, there are evil, child eating ones too in his town, and they are pulled into this battle, surviving high school and the town’s annual festival is not the only thing they have to worry about.
This is the kind of story I enjoyed reading as a kid. Though there is some slightly gory things (trolls being what they are), I think a middle school kid can handle it. It may not be Halloween or October, but this is a summer dark fantasy read not only teenagers and middle schools kids will enjoy, but adults too. Just be sure to check beneath your bed or couch before you do.

Kids vs. giant trolls mixed with horror and humor!

Guillermo del Toro's name drew me to this title, but literally every other thing about it kept me there. It's a fantasy adventure starring kids that feels like an homage to Goonies, Explorers and Lost Boys. One character is named AAARGH! That would've sold me on the book, right there. The story is about monsters and people who fight them, and it has the familiar structure of the movies I mentioned. A kid becomes a part of a hidden world where stuff tries to kill him, and meets buddies who help him not be killed. In addition to the story, a few illustrated pages make the whole thing burst forth. Del Toro and co-creator Daniel Kraus have created a thrilling setting with Del Toro's signature style: horror mixed with humor. Come to this book for AAARGH! But you'll stay for everything else.

Trollhunters

del Toro brings his sense of creepy darkness with more than a touch of gore to the YA adult fantasy scene. And does so with a nice entry for a new series (I believe) that will find favor with plenty who are tired of feisty heroines who spend juggle at least two if not three potential beaus while trying to save the world from some totalitarian regime. No problem with having heroines, but do they all have to be the same?
Nicely paced, though it does settle a bit too much in the well worn trope of having the lead character having to suffer being on the outside and being bullied etc. However for the age group it is aimed at, this is unfortunately a constant struggle in real life so I suspect many will relate.
While I have and hopefully will find some Young Adult books among my favorite reads, this is not one of them. But that is because it is aimed at being in the YA market. Which is fine. But I'm not sure it every comes close to transcending that. It makes for a light simple read for me, but for anyone looking for that, with a little more dark gore than usual in that age group's reading (I suspect), this is a nice addition to the shelves.
