For anyone needing quick reading diagnoses.

Retired elementary reading specialist. Used extensively by classroom teachers and myself to diagnose specific skill gaps to individualize instruction. Using now as a tutor. Has guidance for appropriate assessments for each grade level.Some assessments have alternate forms to measure progress, useful for RtI. Some assessments have Spanish versions. Assessments are short and include phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, rate, phoneme deletion, etc., with GE's. For a recent student I selected only the three assessments that were needed to plan his lessons. My favorite is the phonics analysis, which begins with the alphabet and ends with syllabication of 3-syllable words, including psudowords. I can show the student his results immediately. If phonics is the issue, we spend our time only on what he needs, e.g., digraphs and syllabication.

This book is a keeper!

This is a highly useful book for diagnostic reading assessment. It contains a wide array of tests that focus on the Big 5 of reading and has both English and Spanish assessments. It also includes answer keys and recommended next steps for you assessment results. The individual tests are quick and teacher-friendly to implement. My only feedback is that the organization of the book was somewhat confusing to me.

I've used the assessments in this book to run a full reading assessment battery on a student and my results were useful and informative. I have used the results to differentiate my instruction with this student and the adaptations have been successful. To get the most out of your test results, you need to have some knowledge of error pattern analysis or some understanding of how the sub skills of reading relate to each other. A little Internet research will get you there.

Many of these tests are for elementary aged students, but you can do a full assessment on older students up to high school. The three ring binding makes copying the assessments very easy. This is the best book I have had to purchase in grad school and I plan to keep it and use it for a long time.

This book arrived in a timely manner and arrived in perfect condition.

The assessments are extremely helpful for ESL students!

I used this to assess my forth grade ESL student to see which level he was at for reading. This book is very helpful to see which grade level students are able to read at and what they struggle with. Each assessment provides a very clear outline of how to give they assessment and what the results mean. I like that everything is explained thoroughly. It also suggests what to do if the student did not do well. So far, this book by far has been the most helpful for me. It is definitely something that I will continue to keep when I become a teacher. For now, I have learned many excellent strategies and new assessments to give. The assessments are also very narrow and help understand if the student is having comprehension issues, language barrier issues, little vocabulary knowledge, etc.
For example, an assessment that I found super helpful was one that has a list of words. Next to those words there are three others. The student is required to circle which one matches the word best. I was shocked at how little my student got correct which helped me understand that he has little understanding for vocabulary. Without this book I wouldn't have thought to give that assessment.
