The Definitive Pediatric Neuroradiology Text

I am a pediatric neuroradiologist at a major children's hospital. On a routine basis, patients with extremely rare neurological disorders are imaged in my department. This textbook is always the first place I look when presented with a novel or unusual case, and it is often the only source I require.

Among its many strengths, this textbook is extremely well-written, perhaps the best I have ever read. As several major publishers have switched to an outline, bulleted format for textbook, it is refreshing to have a book written in coherent prose. The writing style is clear and concise. More importantly, most sections are written in a manner that feels like you are actually consulting with an expert, and benefiting from a combination of published papers and their personal experience.

This text is also quite well-organized. It must have been a daunting task to approach writing a complete textbook on the spectrum of pediatric neuroimaging. This book efficiently organizes sections into logical parts. The entire gamut of knowledge in this field is covered, starting with normal anatomy and logically proceeding to congenital anomalies, metabolic and toxic disorders, tumors, infections, etc. As I am fairly familiar with the text by this point, I can often quickly navigate to the section I require simply by virtue of the general category of the disorder.

The book is also image-rich (as it should be). The image quality is excellent, with clear and identifiable abnormalities. There are many clearly organized tables, which aid in categorizing information and making it easily searchable.

Compared with the 4th edition, the new 5th edition contains new sections, new imaging modalities (including DTI and fetal imaging most prominently), new tables, and a new organization of certain chapters. All of the changes are positive. Unlike some new editions that lose ground with new or revised chapters, every change in this text feels like an improvement. Furthermore, there are enough worthwhile changes and additions that those who own a copy of the 4th edition should purchase this new volume.

In the current age of easily accessible information through the Internet, including medical web sites, PubMed, and of course Dr. Google, textbooks in general have lost their central importance as reading room references. However, the new 5th edition of Pediatric Neuroimaging is so comprehensive, and has been so thoroughly updated with modern peer-reviewed papers and the latest imaging modalities, that it will remain relevant and useful for years to come. It belongs in the library of any radiologist whose practice includes pediatric neuroimaging, as well as neurologists, neuro-oncologists or neurosurgeons with an interest in imaging.

It's Barkovich.

What more can I say?

The book is thorough, the descriptions are as complete as can be expected for a radiology book, the images are plenty. In fact, each image has a half-page description, in thorough detail. This is certainly THE BOOK for pediatric neuroradiology. It's giant and scary, but leads you through topics with excellent organization, clear chapters, beautiful summary tables, and excellent images.

For an e-book, it needs some tweaking. The fonts don't change between chapter text and image text. It's hard to tell if I'm reading an image description or main text. It's not possible to look at an image and its description at the same time, like you could in a real book. The image quality decreases rapidly if its zoomed in. I realize these are all technical issues, and I LOVE that this book is available on kindle. The technical issues are a minor inconvenience. Having a massive book that could take out a foot if dropped, all on a small light kindle device, is incredible, and I'm very thankful to the publishers.

Just finished that book, It took a long time and I havent visited the cited articles, which are about 500 for each chapter.
This is deep and interconnected with many genetic processes which needs to be correlated in new classification.

Sad - this book could have used an Editor

First of all - no index.

Second - the CD has examples that are poorly and inconsistently formatted. To use them, you'd have to spend time formatting everything. They should have used fonts, styles, etc. that are used in standard documents.

Thirdly - the book is huge so you'd expect more information on what to put in a Purpose, a Scope, etc. You don't get that. Instead you get a bunch of examples that must have been pulled from one or two companies.

If you are a professional writer like me, you don't want to waste time. You want something in template format that you can easily adapt to your company's product.

If there had been a review of this - I never would have bought it. I'm sorry but this book could have used an Editor. It was so disappointing and I'm so happy that Amazon understood my feelings and accepted the return of this book.

For a potential writer - here is a market! There are startup or small biotech/biomed companies that are trying to meet FDA regulations on SOPs and other related documents. Anatomy of the Sacred is a comprehensive introduction to the nature and variety of religious belief and practices. Designed primarily for those who have not had a previous course in religion, it provides the student with an understanding of what religion is, of the universal forms of religious experience, and of the basic concepts that make up a religious worldview. By employing a comparative analysis across a rich range of ancient and modern religious traditions, this introduction allows students to see the ways in which certain classic forms of religious life appear in different societies over time, as well as to recognize the incredible diversity of human religious expression and belief.

Part I is concerned with such questions as the problem of defining religion, why it is important to study religion, and how one goes about the task, including the several disciplines or methods used in the study of religion. Each method is illustrated with specific examples from the work of eminent scholars in the field, such as Rudolf Otto, Carl Jung, Edward Evans-Pritchard, Victor Turner, Mircea Eliade, and Clifford Geertz.

Part II is an introduction to the universal forms of religious experience and expression and includes discussions of the sacred and holy; religious symbolism, myth, and doctrine; sacred ritual; sacred scripture; and the social dimensions of religion. Each chapter includes an analysis of influential scholarship on the subject, and each topic is fully illustrated with, for instance, examples of the variety of forms of religious ritual and types of religious community.

Part III, which constitutes more than half of the book, consists of a comparative analysis of seven concepts, each one representing a fundamental structure or component of a religious worldview. A religious worldview is holistic, that is, it sees nature, human life, and the divine as interrelated and as forming a comprehensive vision of the world. A religion, therefore, includes a conception of sacred power and of an exemplary natural and social order. It offers an analysis of the breakdown or corruption of that order and of the human problem, but it also provides an answer to the ever-present threat of evil and chaos. Finally, a religious worldview affords an ethical pattern of action, a way of achieving liberation or enlightenment, and an ideal vision of the goal or end of human life. Part III thus includes analyses of such concepts as deity, cosmogony, the human problem, theodicy, ethics, the ways to salvation or liberation, and the end or goal of salvation. Again, each theme is illustrated by examples drawn from a wide variety of religious belief and behavior, ranging from primal and archaic cultures through the religions of the present.

Each chapter of the book includes a preliminary overview which gives the student a clear preview of the major themes that follow. Each chapter also includes photographs, notes, key words, review questions, and suggestions for further reading. An extensive glossary provides a ready explanation of important terms and names used in the book.

Preparing a fourth edition of this book has afforded me the opportunity to undertake some significant revisions, some of which were suggested by teachers who use this text in the classroom. Previous new editions added substantial new material, including whole new chapters, illustrative material, and photographs, increasing substantially the size of the book. In this edition I have attempted to shorten and simplify some discussions and to remove some material to achieve a chapter organization and length that will be in accord with many semester schedules without, however, sacrificing the text's comprehensive and varied coverage.

This fourth edition has also undergone a considerable revision of the teaching aids that accompany each chapter. At the request of several teachers, I have added carefully selected key words for each chapter. I hope this will be helpful to students in sorting out those crucial terms, names, and concepts from those that may, necessarily, be used to relate a myth or to describe a religious phenomenon, but that are not essential to comprehend the concepts of religious beliefs and practices that are key to the purposes of a particular chapter. I remain convinced, nonetheless, that an important goal of a text such as this is to introduce students to the vocabulary of religion—the important terms, concepts, and proper names critical to an educated understanding of the phenomenon of religion and to some of the great religious traditions. I hope that the key words and the expanded glossary will aid in the reader's achievement of this goal. The review questions have also been given careful scrutiny and have, in several cases, been revised. More attention is also given to the overall plan of the book and to how the various chapters may relate and contribute to the whole. Finally, the suggestions for further reading have been updated to include valuable new sources, although many of the classics relevant to a particular subject are retained since they remain just that, standard works.

In preparing a new edition of a book of this scope, I am especially aware of my debt to other scholars and especially to those teachers who were asked to evaluate the third edition and for their advice in the preparation of this one. I am particularly grateful to three persons who assisted me in this revision. As the Visiting Walter G. Mason Professor at the College of William & Mary, Willard G. Oxtoby used this text in his introduction to religion class. He was very generous in spending substantial time with me discussing possible changes and improvements while he was working on a revision of a book of his own. Will's suggestions ranged from small but important details to larger questions of selection and interpretation. I was able to incorporate mast of his proposals.

Hal Breitenberg, a former student who now teaches at Randolph-Macon College, has used Anatomy of the Sacred in the classroom and has given me much wise counsel on revisions. He was particularly helpful regarding the inclusion of key words and with improving the review questions. With his permission, I have incorporated many of his specific suggestions, and on these matters I consider him a genuine collaborator.

Better Editing Needed!

Any book that states (in the 6th edition!) that Buddhist release is called "moksha" (p.143) needs some serious editing. Moksha is the goal of Hinduism, and refers to a perfect union of Atman and Brahman, both concepts which the Buddha rejected. How did this make it through FIVE EDITS? It seems the emphasis in producing new editions has been less on improving the text than on making more money. If you're going to sell books to college students for exorbitant prices, at least don't give them 6 editions of ongoing misinformation.

The book is a great visual resource for fashion students, designers, absolute beginners, or any creative people who love art and glamour. This book is original, modern, and beautifully illustrated - literally bursting with gorgeous fashion photography and sketches in full color. The book is presenting a variety of cutting edge approaches on portfolio development, design process, illustration styles, and presentation.
I absolutely love the fact that this book features both traditional portfolio presentations created through fashion sketching as well as more avant-garde design developments generated through draping and textile manipulation. The book is very well organized, featuring most important industry specializations - knitwear, activewear, evening wear, and lingerie - with detailed examples and fashion vocabulary. The text is easy to understand and fun to read.
As a huge bonus this book has great menswear, children's wear and accessory sections with illustration styles and portfolio examples. Even a bigger bonus are the author's illustrations which I've been a big fan of since her first book "Fashion Illustration: Inspiration and technique" came out.

As a New York City prosecutor and judge, Sheindlin has spent more than 20 years in court with juveniles, both delinquents and objects of delinquency, and parents and custodians who are, lamentably often, delinquent themselves. With Los Angeles Times' correspondent Getlin's able help, she shapes the lessons of her experience into an argument in 10 punches. Each of the 10 is a chapter made up of anecdotal evidence of the abuse of crime and civil-procedural victims, not just by their assailants but by social welfare systems that also victimize taxpayers because of their exorbitant costliness. Besides decrying particular scams and abuses (bad foster care, child custody battles, judges who decide on political rather than human considerations, private social service providers who fleece public funds, miscreants who claim they themselves are victims, etc.), Sheindlin sees American society as having got offtrack. The answer to the messes of urban crime and welfare dependency, she claims, is "self-discipline, individual accountability and responsible conduct." Demand that people behave and make the consequences of misbehavior onerous, she says, and good behavior is surer to follow than if offenders continue to be treated as if they were greater victims than their prey. To those who met them casually, American women seemed a favored species. Again and again European travelers commented on the elevated status of the ladies they encountered in their voyages in the United States. Held in respect, relieved of contact with brutal necessities, allowed to expand their minds, independent guardians of the culture—these were the conventional descriptions. True, a surprisingly large percentage of them labored for a livelihood, and female wage earners were no better off than their male counterparts. As the nineteenth century drew to a close, the number who worked at home or in factories steadily increased. But women of the middle classes were the pampered darlings of the society—elevated on pedestals away from the cares of the workaday world and guarded against all unpleasantness. One of them was Eleanor Roosevelt, daughter of a well-to-do family, bearer of a distinguished name, favored by fortune in every respect.

A First Rate Biography of a Famous First Lady

William Youngs is an elegant writer. He combines a deep understanding of American history with a personal touch and flare that is rare in published biographies. Eleanor Roosevelt: A Personal and Public Life is the best biography of Eleanor Roosevelt available. Youngs skillfully creates a narrative that while filled with historical facts, reads like a novel. The characters absolutely come alive.

If you are in the market for an incredibly readable and interesting take on the life of Eleanor Roosevelt. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Eleanor Roosevelt: A Private and Public Life

I was given this book as a gift and I can say that I greatly enjoyed it! The prologue of the book was fascinating; for someone who was not familiar with the public's perception of Eleanor during WW2 it painted a picture of her as being almost hero-worshipped. I was also drawn in by Youngs' descriptions of her tending to wounded American troops. I admit I had preconcieved notions about the roots of Eleanor, assuming that she came from a life of leisure and priviledge. I had no idea about the trials she faced as a result of the deaths of both of her parents and her brother. I greatly enjoyed the chapters that give details on Eleanor's life prior to becoming First Lady, including her time at Allenswood school and its feminist influence on her life, her work with the WTUL, and when she made public appearances on behalf of her husband after the onset of his polio. When reading Young's work on ER I feel transported into the stories; her frustrations about FDR's illness, her grief when she discovers his affair, her passion for the promotion of women and minorities and most of all her positive, productive outlook on life regardless of the situations she was placed in make Eleanor a friend to the reader, you feel like you know her personally. Youngs' statement calling Eleanor,"...virtually an American saint..." is not far off base and it shows not only the author's deep admiration of his subject but also how she was viewed by the American constituency in this time.

As for those whose reviews say the book lacks depth regarding her contributions as a First Lady, what nonsense. The author clearly describes, in two lengthy chapters, the ways in which she asserted herself politically and personally. The books covers her disagreements with FDR's policies which she made publically, her work amongst women recruiting them to the Democractic party and how she fought against the stereotype of a First Lady being nothing more than a "face" and hostess for the White House. She was the first spouse to speak at a national political convention, she wrote for a paper and was a paid lecturer in a time when women were very limited by social constraints. The book also carefully chronicles Eleanor's life after FDR's death. When most women would have faded into the historical background Eleanor stayed active politically serving on a panel under the Kennedy administration and working closely with the United Nations. Youngs' writing in this chapter entitled "On Her Own" depicts Eleanor's relentless drive to help society and to use her influence in productive ways. The book, while short, weaves together traditional biographical writing with accomplished story telling. It highlights not only Eleanor but the historical period she lived in giving situational context and background history on the social and political challenges of the time.

Formatting decisions, including the way footnotes and endnotes are structured, were certainly not the choice of the author as the book is part of a biographical series in which all books would need to follow the same format. In condemning the book for a percieved lack of correct citations is short-sighted and with this opinion you risk missing out on a great, short biography of one of the most influential and respected women of the 20th century.

Quick Easy Great Read

I'm sorry if I don't have a lot to say but I think reviews sometimes give away too much information (like reading the back of a dvd and learning too much before seeing the movie) I also have noticed that many "critics" complain a lot ;)

I loved this book. It was more than I expected and seemed thorough. I was up late reading it into the wee hours of the morning and fascinated with details I never knew.

I also had NO idea just how much she helped her husband in his politics. She was amazing.
