A readable and thorough introduction to fixed income markets

Extremely readable. One could read this book in a single sitting and get a great jumpstart to an understanding of fixed income markets - the why and the how.
Wiseman has an engaging style of writing which prevents the stifled yawns normally associated with reading this genre, and keeps one turning the pages...
The book nicely covers the fundamental theory of why there exists a fixed income market, then turns to the players and discusses what they do, and finally covers some of the fundamental trading strategies and math employed to turn a buck.

i could not put this book down

i found this book very well written. It provides detail and yet covers that what it says it does. I find that Wiseman explains concepts in a verystraight forward way. Although i had to pause to eat and think about some of the financial products discussed such as "par yields". I found I was able to understand the book. The book contains some of the trader jargon and a outline of the players involved in the market. I think that anyone who wants to something with securities or trading should read this, before/during/after an intership. As the english say "Wiseman" is the dogs ballocks!! get this book!

I needed a primer on this topic and this book absolutely did the trick. It covers all of the basics without getting bogged down in academics (which most books tend to do). If you're just looking for the "who, what, why, hows" then this is a good choice.

i want part 3 now

Okay first off let me say this i'm pissed off LML why you ended the book like that? That shit isn't right my heart dropped when the caller said what they said smh!!! Part 2 takes right off from part 1 and it's even more JUICY... Part 2 "LOVE, ENVY,DEATH& BETRAYAL" is in the air. Some ppl scared to give their heart away because of past experiences, Then there's innocent people getting caught up in wars they have nothing to do with , Jealousy coming in from outsiders/insiders which lead to people doing things out anger & embarrassment!! Snakes come in all sizes and sex never discriminate. Everyone that smile with you ain't ya friend and every sorry isn't genuine... & i'll leave it at that buy the book and read the juiciness yourself if i could give it more stars i would #TeamFrogAndSienna

Outstanding Sequel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my Goodness! Rasheed, I tip my hat off to you because this sequel gave me so much life! Again, I finished this book in a few hours because the it is so entertaining, action packed, gritty, and fast paced! I was flipping through the pages, dying to know what would happen next. I feel like I personally know these characters. Sienna was off the chain in this one, but she and Frog still remain solid! I was all for her slicing Kennedys face up because she deserved it! I felt like Kennedy was a snake before all the drama, so no tear was shed for her! Now she got my girl Kema under fire...smh! I also felt Jermiah's pain as he suffered over Chopper. He loved her and his emotions took over and left him scarred and I hope he is the one to end Melvin! I'm happy Fantasy found love and I cant wait till she returns to the streets. I'm nervous to start part 3 because I have fallen in love with Frog and it will shatter my heart if he is not okay, lol...so serious! As I mentioned about part 1, this book is the dirty truth! Raw and untamed and I loved everything about it. Patiently waiting to see this masterpiece on the big screen...Yes, the book is that good!

Convoluted, test solution errors

Here are my pros and cons

PROS:
•well organized. At the end of each chapter, there's a test problem. At the back of the book is the solutions to test problems.
•additional supplementary problems at the back of the book so you can have a better understanding

CONS:
•not entirely convoluted but a bit hard to follow in some sections of each chapter (each chapter? Yes, each chapter.
•errors in test problem solutions. This baffled me at first. There was no way I couldn't do simple double bookkeeping for the 1st test problem, so I redid it twice more.
•seems like the authors priorities were to be perceived as incredibly knowledgeably in thier field rather than *explaining the essentials of accounting* (like it misguided me and says on the cover of the book)
•book says "each lesson takes 1 hour." More realistically, 3 hours including the test question at the end of each chapter
•focuses on controversial concepts different accountants use (eg., "most accountants refer to interest as expense, but it's really a cost of borrowing working money... The concept is related to concept of dividends" and then explains the extremes of what interest can come from). I don't need to know what corporate accountants do. I need to know the essentials.
•front cover reads "explains essentials of accounting." It lied.

Save your money!

I bought this book due to all the glowing reviews here, and now that I have it, I'm thorougly confused--both by the book and by the glowing reviews. In 1999, I took two college accounting courses and made an A in each of them. Now, eleven years later, I am enrolled in school to complete my accounting degree. I bought this book to brush up on my skills before my next accounting class starts in January. I sure wish I had just saved my money on this, and gone ahead and bought a textbook. This book does not explain things well at all. I just completed chapter 4, and I feel like I know less about accounting than I did when I started. Even worse, I have already found several errors, some mathematical, and some are probably typos (amounts put in the wrong columns, etc.). How do I know if I'm doing the problems right, if the answer key is full or errors?

In short, I don't recommend this book for either students or business people. There has to be something that is easier to understand and has fewer errors out there.

NOT for the Beginning Student

I am a college student whose area of study is Digital Forensic Investigations, and one of the requirements for the degree is a course in Forensic Accounting, however for whatever reason there is not a prerequisite for this course. I opted to take Principles of Accounting to understand the basics and make it my own prerequisite. Since I have a month and a half off school, I figured I would get a head start and start to familiarize myself with the basic principles so that I wouldn't be totally lost in my class. In this previous semester I had taken Investigating White Collar Crime, and easily understood the basics of Fraud Auditing such as shell accounts, check fraud, money laundering, embezzlement and analyzing this using the Benford-Curve Analysis on statement sheets.

I picked up this book thinking that I would get a great basic understanding for my class next semester. My heart sank when I read "The course assumes the reader to have a layman's acquaintance with such terms as accounts receivable and common stock, but it also assumes zero knowledge of the accounting process at the outset." I bought the book a week ago and I'm still trying to understand Chapter 1: The Balance Sheet. The most frustrating part of this chapter was the fact that it gave a formula for finding "net worth" then 3 pages later it states to disregard that term, and replace it with "stockholders' equity or capital stock." Yet, there is no definition of these terms and aren't even discussed. In the examples of the balance sheet (and there's 5 different layout forms to select from) there's no explanation of why a certain value is entered in column 1 and some of the others are in column 2, and sometimes column 3. It would have been nice to have that explanation. There are tests at the end of each chapter, which is really nice to see, and thought that would help me. In the test problem however there was mention of dividends, mortgage notes, uncollectible funds, unexpired insurance, inventory without ANY mention of these terms or how to include them into a statement sheet, let alone what category they should be included. I feel that if it's on the test then it should be discussed in the chapter.

If this is a 36 Hour course then I have failed. I am now into Night 4 at about 2 hours each session to try to grasp just the first chapter. A lot of these reviews are from business professionals who have given this book great reviews and say it's a "must have" and how much it helped them. I am writing this review from a perspective of a brand new student to this field. Be warned: if you get this book then this is not your only resource to understand this material. I had to use search engines to research basic terminology that I felt should have been included in a glossary, and had to "cheat" by looking at the solution to even begin to understand how to layout the statement sheet because of the added factors on the test question that was not discussed in the forms.

This course may be 36-Hours but that's 36-Hours of studying just the book. Unfortunately that time frame does not include the usage of additional research and information sources.

A Realistic Look at Life

I docked one star because I think the book was released too early in Ailan's life. Not only from the point of view that he has to grow up in a tough world with his story in the public domain, but after what Alex seemed to have morphed into,it would have been interesting to see how Ailan fared at a similar age. Sequel perhaps?

Outdated, small, unclear drawings

About half this book is "This is a drill. This is a drill bit. This is a screwdriver"

A quarter is charts and tables you will never use or be able to match equipment to. I'm an industrial electrician apprentice, and I doubt I'll ever use these pages, which were meant for people in my specialty.

The drawings are pre-1989 era (the date on this book), and therefore have old pre-CAD drawings...you can't tell what is a wire and what is pointing to a wire, so you have no idea what is labeled what...is that a blue wire? Is that a pointer? Why are two wires labeled with different colors? All line drawings, and few things that are educational.

Why does a REFERENCE book tell me what a screwdriver is? Who doesnt know that? Theres also many things lacking, such as modern Lock Out Tag Out procedures.

I'm glad I only paid a few dollars for this book; if I had paid even half the cover price, I would have been sick.

a great pocket manual

This pocket manual is rated next to pocket manual such as ugly's although the diagrams and some of the text could be larger, it is the best pocket reference manual i have seen. It has stuff that ugly's do'nt have but that does not stop the rest of the dynamic information from being clear and consise. It could have more NEC references and such items such as pipe bending angles and various area formula's in the next printing though. But all said and done it is the new reference in my back pocket from now on and as a student this quick reference is very vital

Best pocket reference ever

This is one of the best pocket reference book that I have bought so far. Plenty of information on how to read digital electrical meters and their meaning. (main reason for purchasing this book). Lots of diagram that shows in detail about high and low voltage outlets and prongs. I only wish that the letters were a little bigger. My eyesight is not so good.

About the Author
Highly respected social work educators, Dean H. Hepworth and Jo Ann Larsen originally defined how direct practice should be taught.

Ronald Rooney is a Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota. A practitioner in child welfare, community mental health, and school social work, Dr. Rooney is also the author of STRATEGIES FOR WORK WITH INVOLUNTARY CLIENTS. He was the 2004 winner of the Academic Leadership Award of the College of Human Ecology, University of Minnesota.

Glenda Dewberry Rooney is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Social Work at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses in direct practice, ethics, and research as well as courses in organizations and administration. Her practice experience includes child welfare, mental health, and work with families and children. In addition to her practice experience, she has been involved in community-based research and has worked with agencies concerned with children, youth, and families as a trainer and as a clinical, program, and management consultant. Active in retirement, Dr. Rooney continues to be an advocate for child welfare policies and practices that strengthen and support families. She served as a state-wide leader involved in developing community partnerships for the public education during the enrollment periods of the Affordable Care Act.

Kim Strom-Gottfried is a Professor at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work, where she teaches in the areas of direct practice, communities and organizations, and human resource management. Dr. Strom-Gottfried's scholarly interests involve ethics, managed care, and social work education. She provides training and consultation and research related to private practice, ethics, and managed care.

Way too expensive and no customer support

This publisher withholds material for which they expect more money. You have to spend an additional $40 to have access to videos and other study guides, which are repeatedly mentioned in the main text, which, by the way, already costs $150. Major rip off, would you not agree?

Average book. VERY dry.

First and foremost, this book is very expensive (as most college books are). They're fairly new, so it's hard to find any of these that are used and cheaper. This book is so dry, and it's very hard to get through the chapters. Prepare yourself, social work majors. I will say that the examples of social work/client dialogue are very helpful, and that's just about all the help I got from this book. My professor was a lot better at explaining things than the book was. Overall, not the best practicum book I've ever had. Also not the worst.

Please don't subject your students to this book!

I read this book as part of a Master's Social Work class. My classmates and I all complained regularly about this book. It is poorly written - the verbiage is awkward and murky - many concepts could have been more effectively explained with far fewer words. The authors seemed to think that the bigger the word, the more effective the communication. After a while, the reader's mind just shuts down from working too hard trying to figure out exactly what the Authors are saying.
Also, there were very few pages that didn't have at least one grammatical error. Proper grammar should be textbook 101 in my opinion. Another review stated the textbook was dry - which is giving it far too much credit. I have never fallen asleep so often while reading a textbook. My social work research book was far more interesting a read than this book. If you're looking for a good book on Social Work Practice... keep looking.

About the Author
R Michael Range is an expert in multidimensional complex analysis. He has written numerous articles for professional journals, and he is the author of a widely known book in the field that was first published in 1986. Besides advanced graduate level courses, he has taught calculus and analysis at all levels over many years. These experiences have led him to search for alternate approaches and simplifications that are reflected in this path-breaking book.
