About the Author
Jizhong Zhou is a Staff Scientist and science leader for the Microbial Genomics and Ecology section in the Environmental Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is the author of more than 50 publications on molecular biology, microbial genomics, molecular evolution, microbial ecology, bioremediation, and theoretical ecology.

Ying Xu is the group leader of the computational protein structure group of Life Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He serves on a number of scientific review committees including the NIH review panel on structural genomics.

James M. Tiedje is University Distinguished Professor of Microbial Ecology and Director of the National Science Foundation Center for Microbial Ecology at Michigan State University. He is a Fellow of ASA, SSSA, AAAS, the International Institute of Biotechnology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.

Dorothea Thompson is currently a Research Staff Scientist in the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laborat ory (ORNL), working in the area of microbial functional genomics. She received her Ph.D. in molecular microbiology from The Ohio State University (Columbus, OH) and master’s degrees from Virginia Tech and the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Thompson pursued postdoctoral training in bacterial pathogen typing and vaccine development at the U. S. Food and Drug Administration in Bethesda, Maryland, and in DNA microarray-based gene expression analysis at ORNL before becoming a staff member in 2002. Her research interests and expertise focus on the mechanisms of transcription regulation in prokaryotic systems and the use of genomic technologies, specifically DNA microarrays, to describe the molecular basis underlying cellular adaptation to environmental stresses.

About the Author
Christopher J. Wild, PhD, Professor of Statistics University of Auckland. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association and Royal Society of New Zealand Chris Wild works on developing methods for modelling response-selective data (e.g. case-control studies) and missing data problems, and in statistics education with particular emphasis on statistical thinking and reasoning processes.

George A. F. Seber, PhD, Dip. Counsel. is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. A Fellow of the New Zealand Royal Society and recipient of the Hector Medal in Science by the NZ Royal Society, he is the author or coauthor of 15 statistical books and an extensive book on counselling.� His research interests have included linear and nonlinear modeling, multivariate analysis,� statistical ecology, genetics, epidemiology, and adaptive sampling.

Jon Schiller received the BS in Physics from the California Institute of Technology and the MS and Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. As an executive of multinational corporations he was responsible for designing Avionics systems using airborne computers for advanced aircraft such as the F111 fighter (which used GPS for the first time) and the Stealth bomber.

About the Author
D. Peter Snustad is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Minnesota and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Davis. He began his faculty career in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at Minnesota in 1965, became a charter member of the new Department of Genetics in 1966, and moved to the Department of Plant Biology in 2000. During his 43 years at Minnesota, he taught courses ranging from general biology to biochemical genetics. His initial research focused on the interactions between bacteriophage T4 and its host, E. coli. In the 1980s, his research switched to the cytoskeleton of Arabidopsis and the glutamine synthetase genes of corn. His honors include the Morse-Amoco and Dagley Memorial teaching awards and election to Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. A lifelong love of the Canadian wilderness has kept him in nearby Minnesota.

Michael J. Simmons is a Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He received his B.A. degree in biology from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in genetics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Simmons has taught a variety of courses, including genetics and population genetics. He has also mentored many students on research projects in his laboratory. Early in his career he received the Morse-Amoco teaching award from the University of Minnesota in recognition of his contributions to undergraduate education. Dr. Simmons’s research focuses on the genetic significance of transposable elements in the genome of Drosophila melanogaster. He has served on advisory committees at the National Institutes of Health and was a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Genetics for 21 years. One of his favorite activities, figure skating, is especially compatible with the Minnesota climate.

Kindle version of "principles of genetics"

The kindle version of this book is very easy to navigate, looks great and is much easier to carry around then the physical book. The book also opens up quickly and had little load time when navigating the book. My only complaint is there was a couple times that a portion of the book was absent or "cut out". This was not a weird loading error because the page would always show up with the portion missing. Also, I don't think you can open this book through the kindle app on another computer.

An Outstanding TextBook In Genetics

This is one of the best textbooks that I have seen. First it seems exceptionally complete and does not shy away from being challenging at times. The explanations are clear and precise. It is well illustrated. It's coverage of genetics from basic concepts to advanced concepts is ideal for serious classes in Biology majors who expect to go further. The book also introduces the student to a resource that immensely useful in research: The National Center for Biotechnology Information database (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). The book has inspired me to research the subject further.
