The Princess of Wales,,,Good Story!

i liked this short bio on Princess Diana. It was to the point and told just enough detail to make it interesting. I found out things i didnt know, re-lived the things i did, and have a good deal more insight to the Royal family and how they think and act. I always admired Princess Diana and i thought she was wronged by the Royal Family alot from the way they acted at times. She really did care and was alot more Royal than Charles in my opinion. I think the author did a nice job with this story.

I have always wanted to know why Princess Diana moved so many people around the world, so I decided to give this book a try. And I'm glad to say it totally delivers what it promises! Now I understand why Diana touched so many lives along her short, but meaningful life. If you are looking for a straightforward read on Pricess Diana, I give you my word that you should start with this one. It's totally worth it.

This is a great read however, please be aware that this isn't a full book rather a great synopsis of the "People's Princess". Mr. Crichton wrote a story that was considerate of the Princess' family yet told her story. I wasn't to sure if this book was going to be worth reading since so much has been written about Princess Diana but the story was told well and worked for me.

About the Author
Born in 1970, Matthew Farrer has spent most of the subsequent period in and around Canberra, Australia and is a member of the Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild. He has been writing since his teens, although he didn't break into professional sales until Badlands Skelter's Downhive Monster Show appeared in Inferno! a few years ago. Since then he has published a number of short stories and was shortlisted for an Aurealis Award in 2001.

Detective Fiction in the Far Future

I had never heard of either Matt Farrer or Shira Calpurnia before I picked up this omnibus, so I really had no expectations, but even if I had looked forward to this for months I would not have been disappointed.

The author's intriduction sets the stage very well, talking about how ordinary humans in the 40th millenium could be just as bad as the aliens or corrupted. I am a big fan of detective novels, and the protagonist Shira Calpurnia is very well done.

One of the worst problems the Black Library (the publisher of these types of books) has is that it sometimes lets books slip out that make no sense and where the author has no grasp of the setting. Farrer has the setting down cold. These novels are filled with the crazy darkness of the Warhammer 40k universe, with the Arbites standing out as cold and efficient dispensers of justice.

If you want to find out more about the Adeptus Arbites and what it is like to be normal in a universe filled with the supernatural and fantastic, get this book. If you have liked any of the various novels about the Imperial Guard, you will not be disappointed.

Law in the 41st Millinium

I would not recommend this be anyone's first exposure to the WH40K universe as it assumes the reader has knowledge of the world in general and the Adeptus Arbites in particular. (I made that mistake, but got enough information from the Dark Heresy RPG book to make sense of it.)

The first and third books and short stories contained in Enforcer are a good look at how dark and gritty WH40K is and how tough law enforcement has to be to keep order. The second book did not deal all that much with the law. The author talked about the law and the research Shira did to prepare for the hearing. But when the hearing came, it turned into a battle and no law was actually done. That bothered me because I did not feel like Shira was very important to that book.

One problem I had with the books is the number of character's the author introduces. I seriously considered making a list of them while reading so I could keep them all straight. The primary characters are easy, but there are a lot of secondary characters that can get confusing.

Crime Investigation 40K Imperium Style

In contrast to other reviewers, who have tended to wax lyrical or have hated the Shira Calpurnia Omnibus, I will try to remain more moderate.

The idea itself - a focus on the Arbites, on crime investigations in two cases and on arbitraging the inheritance of a outstanding Rogue Trader, in the third, is somewhat original and deserves credit. Bits and pieces of the three stories are interesting and illustrate the bureaucratic infights between the various Imperial Services, in particular the Ecclesiarchy, the Arbites and the Navy in the Hydraphur system, while some of the "action scenes" - in particular the ambush by false teams of workers in book 1 - are rather good.

Some context and background history is sometimes missing, for instance to explain the importance of the Ecclesiarchy, while some descriptions tend to be lengthy, sometimes almost boring, and slow down the story - often without much added value.

There are - unfortunatly - some other flaws:

- One is that Calpurnia never seems to really come alive. You sometimes feel that the character is going to acquire some substance but the story moves on before it can really happen.
- Another is that there are multiple stereotypes, with the Arbites being ruthless, tough, heavy handed, the shoot-first-ask-questions after type, which makes them into rather unconvincing candidates to conduct criminal investigations. Interrogation is limited to systematic torture of suspects (meaning anyone who happens to be detained) and is supposed to be very efficient because everyone talks in the end, and supposedly tells the truth before being executed.
- Another cliche and a bit of a caricature is the presentation of the Inquisition - with the Inquisitor throwing his weight about but not achieving anything of note.

Granted, the 40K Imperium is not exactly in love with Human Rights and it's more of a totalitarian regime than anything else. However, the general picture of bureaucratic inefficiency and casual and quite unnecessary police brutality and violence is hardly convincing.

In addition, the motivations of the vilains in the first and third story never get to be properly explained. The punishment of Calpurnia, for having allegedly failed, is hardly credible and in line with the kind of support and sympathy that she was getting in the previous stories.

In short: interesting, but not always consistent and a bit of a mixed bag...

Book Needs To Be Proofread.

While the book does a good job on teaching basic Database concepts and provides excellent examples to fortify your learning, there is one big problem.

The book is one gigantic error. The sample problems and exercises are missing code and syntax making exercises very hard to follow and having the reader fill in the missing pieces for the examples to be correct and consistent.

For someone new to database, this book will prove to be a big mess of confusion since consistency and order are missing with the hands-on work.

This book should go back to the publisher or author and be proofread and have all the sample problems, exercises and hands-on work verified to work because I can guarantee that half of them will not if copied from this text.

Sound theoretical foundations!

For anyone interested in learning the database theory, this is a must-read book. The author did an excellent job in explaining difficult E-R relationships, data structures, system catalog, UML diagrams, and the components of distributed systems. The lab exercises can be implemented by using the commercial database software: Oracle 9i, MS SQL Server, MS Access, MySQL and MS Visio. This book is very practical and much better than other database textbooks.

If I hadn't had to read it for a class I wouldn't have

This book reads like a technical manual which wouldn't be bad if it weren't supposed to be an entry level book. The first five chapters include a history of the different database types, and read with the same phenomenal pace as a 300 page calculus equation.

I found myself constantly falling asleep while reading the book and then having to go back whole pages to try to decipher what I had already been reading. Eventually I started reading it but only looking for key text and not truly absorbing the material presented.

This book was chosen by an instructor for a class I am taking. This book has convinced me not to change my major to Database Administration. I have gone through the effort of reading other source material on SQL to be able to peform the exercises and take the tests required for the class.

If you happen across this book and decide to try to read it, skip to chapter six and that should be the only chapter you actually need for most reasons that would bring you to the book.

I am an avid reader and always read the full text for any class, never skimming or just using the index to take tests. This is the absolute worst text book I have ever been asked to try to get through.

Hot Book for a Cold War

This was a book that worried me, as there is so much to cover and so many traps that you can fall into with it (i.e. "Hey, let's do tank rush #13,123,459!). Instead, this book really turned out to be the best of the Ambush Games bunch, with a great diversity in scenarios, focus, and overall production.

There are a few new rules meant to capture the flavor of the Warsaw Pact's restrictive command structure, as well as suggestions for using rules like the NBC rules in the main rulebook. Along with this are pretty extensive Tables of Organization and Equipment (TO&E) in the back of the book, along with a listings of different support weapons, particularly stats of different AT weapons and ATGMs. The stats in the back of the book do include familiar vehicles, however they have been modified to show what is obsolete now was like when it was brand-new. So even with familiar vehicles, you are getting all-new stats.

The scenarios themselves are wonderfully varied, broken down into three rough categories, the first of which is Cold War Fears. This category shows what NATO analysts feared, a strong Russian attack. Thus, a great many of the scenarios have the Russians on the offensive, whether it be a Special Forces operation or a full-on tank assault. The second is Cold War Realities, which shows the weakness of Soviet Forces and takes in the idea of NATO mobilizing while waiting for the Russians and their own possible counterattacks. These scenarios have NATO on the offensive, with airborne operations into Poland and a few tasty missions which could have really happened, by accident or on purpose. Finally there are the Cold War Fantasies, which encompasses all the various ridiculous movie plots from missions into Russia, Russians in America, and more. This chapter probably has the most globetrotting, from the Arctic Circle to small-town Wisconsin (Which is similar to the Arctic Circle, only with more people), and the authors definitely were having fun with these.

Overall, this book is probably the best supplement Ambush Games has put out. It has the right balance of elements and scenarios, and the different outlooks on the Cold War definitely makes the book feel larger than it is. A great buy, and hopefully the next lineup of books will be just like this one.

Good Gaming Ahead

For the history fan, this book has interesting information that has been declassified and made available to the West since the fall of the USSR. Perhaps the most important one is that Warsaw Pact forces weren't nearly the juggernaut they were presented as.

For the gamer (i.e. the target audience) there are three chapters of scenarios. "Cold War Fears" deals with what NATO was afraid WWIII might be like. "Cold War Realities" has scenarios based on the newly-available information. "Cold War Fantasies" draws inspiration from movies made during the Cold War. I identified Red Dawn, Escape From New York, and A Few Good Men (which was after the Cold War, but whatever).

The material is clear and concise, as you would expect from an Osprey book, and you can jump into dicing out your firefights with little preparation.

Living in Germany durning the time in this game and being part of the military that would of faced off against the East Germans and Russians, I found this very helpful in setting war games based on this time in history .

Excellent introduction to Reliability Analysis

Igor Bazovsky's 1961 Reliability Theory and Practice is newly available in a reprint edition by Dover Publications (2004). Once again, Dover should be thanked for restoring to availability a classic which, while dating to the earlier years, in this case, of reliability analysis in engineering, presents the field in exceptional clarity. Dover provides this service, moreover, at a price which is a small fraction of what most technical textbook publishers would charge for an exact reprint of even a forty-year-old textbook, or of what some used booksellers would demand for a remaining original edition in a discipline such as applied statistics (often much more than a new book would cost!). Contemporary texts frequently become mired in mathematical formulae, without presentation of a coherent, concrete idea of the area, so that is difficult to see the forest for the trees. Bazovsky's text is outstanding in explaining what reliability engineering and analysis is all about, in well-written, well-paced, well-organized, ordinary language. In order to fully understand the formulae which Bazovsky presents, one must have sufficient command of algebraic and exponential functions, some exposure to calculus, and an introductory level familiarity with statistics. Just the same, one could take the formulae on faith, and gain a substantial awareness of the issues and methods of reliability analysis, providing a decent foundation for more a more contemporary treatment of the field. Somewhere between, where many readers may be poised, the author presents in a logical, practically motivated exposition the fundamental ideas of reliability engineering, from simple failure rates, to more complicated systems, progressively introducing at a manageable pace such concepts as wearout, early failure, replacement strategies and policies, and series of components. Unlike authors who may initially introduce a subject in language accessible to a novice but rapidly change to an exclusive emphasis on complex mathematical relationships, Bazovsky maintains a conversational tone throughout, with explanation in plain language remaining dominant, even as progressively more complicated ideas are presented in symbolic language. Where formulas are presented, a rare balance is maintained between excessive derivational detail and a sincere effort to carry the reader along without undue frustration. The author's clear objective is to bring the reader along and to teach effectively, with concern for the student's developing understanding. Thus, this work remains an outstanding introduction to reliability theory and, thanks to Dover, can continue to provide a guide to those who are weary of an ethic of avoiding patiently-presented explanation and concrete, numerical examples which often seems to be de rigueur for professional self-respect among contemporary authors in quantitative applications.

An outstanding text

I was fortunate enough to find this gem of a book in a used bookstore, and it quickly found a place among my favorite technical references. Like so many engineering texts of the late 1950's and early 1960's, Bazovsky's concise treatise masterfully balances technical thoroughness with readability. The technical content is all there, but presented in prose that is clear and accessible to a wide range of technical readers.

Kudos to Dover for re-printing this masterpiece, and offering it at such an affordable price!

A complete work, a milestone for reliability

As correctly stated in the previous reviews about this book, we are dealing with a dated work ( first edition is dated back 1961...). Nevertheless the Bazowsky's work is, as matter of the fact, a masterpiece really well written and easy to read.

I bought this book with the aim of giving a theoretical frameset to the reliability tests we performed on the product we build in our factory with the goal of developing a judicious risk assessment for some kind of failures we observed during the lab tests and from the final users in the market, and I discovered in it much more.

Starting with the realibility concept and definition, passing through whareout and Chance effect the "reliability" subject is completely developed.

Peculiarly interesting are chapters 18-19 ("Reliability Design and consideration" and "Design Analysis examples"). Also chapter 8 ("Early failures and the life function of components") and 17 ("System maintenance, availability and dependability") are interesting by offering the reader immediately practical application.

Since the reliability science had a big development momentum in the Electronic component manufacturing/assembly industry you will find that most examples came from that background but it is not so difficult to abstract the theory in the field you work or you want to generalize about.

Finishing, this book as the rare quality of being complete: both from the theoretical and the practical point view. Since the theoretical stand point is well developed a strong mathematical and statistical background is needed for fully understanding the paperwork. Be aware of this. But the fatigue is well compensated with the results of having a clear picture of the subject. 5 stars with no doubt even If compared with the really low price of this new paperback edition.
