When I saw a blog post about this book I had to get it. When I was in 7th or 8th grade I got my first Atari. It was an 800 XL. I had it connected to a small Sony TV, had a 1050 Floppy drive, a MPP 300 Baud modem, and an Atari thermal printer. Eventually I upgraded my 800 XL with the 256KB Rambo chip, had four Happy1050 drives, got an Okidata printer, and had a 1200 baud modem where I ran my Atari BBS (Sorcery in the 707 area code). I started the BBS on FoReM (which he talks about), but later moved to Carina and then Oasis, before I ended my BBS days. My neighbor was a pilot in the Air Force and he is the one who got me into Atari. I had a 2600, but the games on the 800XL were much better, and drew me in. I subscribed to Antic magazine, tried programming in Basic, but my real passion was phone phreaking and calling remote BBS systems all over the US for free with Sprint dial up card numbers that were shared on many of the pirate boards. This book brought back all those memories of my teen age years and the nefarious things that I thought I was doing. As mentioned in the book, I got my Mom to buy the Atari 5200, which I thought was awesome, but short lived. Near the end of high school I bought an Atari 520 ST and I remember driving down to San Jose to visit the local ATARI only computer shops just to buy software and new accessories for the struggling system. I am saddened that I got rid of all my Atari devices. I know I donated my ST, I don't remember what I did with my 800, I think I gave it to my neighbor when we moved. I am not completely done with the book, I just made it to the chapters that talk about games, which I may skip over (except for Ultima, which was my favorite game for Atari, along with Castle Wolfenstein and a few others). I will say, scanning through that section I did notice games I had totally forgotten about.

I enjoyed the first part of the book where he goes into the history of Atari, and the development of the systems and the various personalities at Atari. That was really interesting. I did notice, however, when he introduces the Atari 1200, the image on the page shows the 1200, but the caption says Atari 800XL. That's a misprint I noticed.

Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who owned and loved their Atari! ATASCII for life! I also bought that Atari Game Art book a while ago, that is highly recommended as well.

Excellent book on the Atari 8-bit computers. Good history and lots of software information. If you have any interest in classic computers, especially Atari, you should greatly enjoy this book.

Great read with a single very minor error... :)

Great book - brings back lots of memories.

There is one strange error in it though. The author covers the game Bandits by Sirius Software. He loves the game and is doubly-proud that it's an Atari exclusive. Not true. In fact the game itself will subtly tell you this. The game came out the year before for the Apple ][.

When the title screen scrolls up, it shows an apple before the title ('Apple Bandits'). Then an alien comes out and eats the apple to show an Atari symbol underneath ('Atari Bandits').

I do remember playing this at a local computer store on the Apple ][, and hoping they would convert it to my Atari.

Mazzucco's intermittently commanding and moving epic about the Italian immigrant experience tells the story of two children from a rural village in southern Italy amid the fetid slums of New York, circa 1903. Diamante, aged twelve, is the author's paternal grandfather, and Mazzucco mixes fact with fiction in an attempt to imagine the life of his nine-year-old cousin Vita, a girl "with a great mass of dark hair and deep dark eyes." In this long but heartfelt novel, Mazzucco tells the story of 12-year-old Diamante and 9-year-old Vita, who make the arduous journey from Italy to Ellis Island in 1903; their exhilarating, terrifying trip will be the source of a lifelong bond. They make their way to a squalid boardinghouse owned by Vita's gruff, irritable father, where they room with more than a dozen other impoverished immigrants. Vita cooks and cleans all day, while Diamante works long hours at odd jobs, making just enough to pay for his food. When the two increasingly turn to each other for comfort, Vita's father harshly intervenes, and Diamante leaves for Ohio, where he spends years engaged in backbreaking work. Vita, meanwhile, feisty and reckless, opens a restaurant and makes a fortune but longs for the unique connection she shared with her first love. Mazzucco won Italy's Strega Prize for this lavishly detailed novel, which also incorporates nonfiction chapters about her family history. I enjoyed it very much. The rough & tumble lives of the immigrants sailing, en masse into NYC at the turn of the century. Many of the main characters are ancestors of the author.

Wonderful book ! I could not put it down. A tale written in an unusual manner and especially exciting because my grandparents lived 5 blocks from 18 Prince street. Weaves the characters over a span of 50 years and their relationaship with each other.

I am very disappointed in this book. I am of Italian ancestry and my family lived in NY when they first arrived from Italy. I was anticipating a more rivieting story. Im having a hard time getting through it.

Wally Chappell has been preaching since his first appointment as Pastor in 1947, while a student in seminary. He was always known as an interesting, challenging preacher, who held the interest of his congregation. Many, across the years, encouraged him to put some sermons in print. He first tried his hand at retirement at 69, but became employed in community relations work for a local mortgage company for five and half years; and then came back to full-time church work as a retired associate for pastoral care at First United Methodist Church of Dallas where he remained on staff until 87 years of age. He finally 'got retirement right'. "Yes", he said, "I was wobbly, and fearful I'd spill communion wine on someone." Friends continued to encourage him to publish, and this book is the result. It is mostly sermons, with a eulogy, a devotional and a couple of stories tossed in. All were delivered at First Methodist Church of Dallas, some in Sunday school classes, retreats and studies. His engineer background shows, in a practical, matter-of-fact approach to spiritual matters. He is known as a clear thinker, and a passionate advocate of the Christian Way. He writes for speech, not the written page, and it shows in his syntax. He said, "I guess I 'preach' everything I read, sort of trying on the words for oral delivery." And it shows in reading the text. He is a Biblical preacher, almost always seeking to develop some passage of scripture. The reader will find these messages thought provoking, challenging and clear. It may help to know there were other "Wallace Chappells" in the Methodist ministry. This is the Texan, by birth, rearing and service, who sees himself a citizen of the world, and a lover of mountains.
