I recently had the pleasure of reviewing Ray Horak’s book, Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook. The book’s 791 pages, divided into 15 chapters, cover everything from legacy technology such as basic telephone switching to leading edge technologies such as DWDM optical networks, 3G wireless networks, and IPTV converged video. I have read other Horak books in the past, but this one is the most comprehensive one that he has done to date.
The book appears to be best suited as either a text book for a telecommunications class or a reference book. Using Texas terminology, the book is a mile wide but not very deep. You would be hard pressed to find a topic that was not discussed in the almost 800 pages of the book, but most topics are covered in less than one page. It is an encyclopedic work, not the reference that you would use if you needed a comprehensive understanding of any specific technology. On the other hand, if one of your peers brings up a new technology during the course of a conversation (for example MMS), and you want to know what he or she is talking about to avoid appearing uninformed, this book could prove to be invaluable. In other words, it doesn’t paint the whole picture in high resolution, but it provides a lot more than a snapshot.
A few of the topics that I found of the most interest included the sections on Broadband over Power Line (BPL), HiperLAN, VDSL, IEEE 802.16 WiMAX and IPTV. There are a few topics that I would like to have seen covered that were not, but this leaves open the opportunity for the next edition.
Overall, I found the book to be a well written wealth of knowledge. I plan to use it as the text for my undergraduate course in telecommunications in the spring.

A professional "Must Have"

I have been a telecom professional for more than 30 years and I never thought any single reference book could surpass "Newton's Telecom Dictionary" for simplicity, accuracy and value.
But Ray Horak's "Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook" doesn't just exceed expectations; it raises the bar for any other authors who might consider entering the telecom reference book arena. This book has become the new "Bible" on my reference shelf. Mr. Horak obviously posesses an encyclopedic knowledge of the technology and general industry. He is able to express what he knows in terms that will be understood by the novice as well as the seasoned professional.
This book is a "must have" for anyone working in the telecom / IT industry. Add it to your Christmas wish list today. Or, skip the next telecom conference that you hoped to attend and just buy this book instead. You'll get more lasting value from the book.

Outstanding Choice

I've been on the data side of data/voice my whole career, but with the convergence of both into a single network approach, I found I needed to get more in-depth background on the telecomm side. I searched amazon.com thoroughly and finally found this book. I didn't know what to think when I ordered it--whether it would meet my needs or not--because there just wasn't enough info to be had in the description. But be that as it may, this book has met and exceeded whatever expectations I then had.

It's written in a straightforward manner. And although the author makes attempts at humor, he's not altogether good at it. But regardless, his writing style presents a virtually seamless effort in combining intricate detail within simple and succinct writing. So far, I haven't been left behind intellectually; but likewise, it hasn't left me feeling like he's dumbed it down to a fifth-grade level either. Yes, I have an extensive background in data, and that helps me. But the good news is that my old knowledge is now being augmented with more in-depth understanding about everything telecomm. And that's exactly what I was hoping for.

Obviously, the book does delve into the data side--it has to. But the overall picture I'm left with on both sides is now much more robust; much broader and more complete. This nugget was just what I needed.

Note that the typeface is fairly small and there are 730 pages, not including appendices. The information is organized very well in the 1.1.1.1-style format. There's an excellent index I've already used to my advantage, and an extensive list of acronyms and abbreviations that helps out a lot. There are a few minor editing mistakes, but not nearly enough to distract the conscientous reader.

I wish all technical materials were this well done. Overall an outstanding choice for those who want a deeper understanding of the telecommunications world.

Better than the Internet!

Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook contains fifteen chapters and covers a wide variety of topics. The book can be recommended for different audiences, starting from students, which decided to become Electrical Engineers, as well as for engineers and managers, and technicians who need always to have a reliable source of information. It is a timely encyclopedic work and will remain so for many years! It also is a perfect companion to Horak's other excellent work, Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary, also published by Wiley in 2007.

Horak is an independent telecom consultant. He is active in litigation support as a consulting expert and testifying expert, often in cases involving intellectual property such as patent, copyright, and trademark and service infringement. He has authored five telecom books and written of hundreds of technical articles, white papers, case studies, and solution briefs.

Vladimir Kaminsky, PhD is a President of Practel, Inc, a consulting company that is specializing in advanced communications technologies and network design.

Comparing to the Third Edition

Since this edition is brand new at this writing, I'm taking the time to compare it to the wonderful third edition of the same text. The reason is simple: the old edition is now available for $3 US used, and the new is over $110. Even a completely sealed, code unused with CD of the third can be had for under $20 US from marketplace sellers from time to time, so the cost investment difference is significant.

Two reasons why some might try to sell you on this vs. the third: 1. It is for a class and the teacher insists that some of the exercises or animations are more up to date here or 2. You agree with the publisher that a "lot" has happened in Neuroscience since 2006.

I've gone page for page over the exercises, and unless your teacher is a real butthead, or paid by the publisher, they really are not that different in this edition! Besides, this is NOT a deeply technical text, it is a very student friendly overview that actually is a real pleasure to read. The authors are such good writers, that it reads like a novel, and both editions have been praised for making reading/studying a dopamine studded pleasurable experience, not a painful chore.

As far as all the new science: well, hmmm. There IS a lot of new research, which you can look up on the web. BUT, the genome stuff, and functional MRI, were abundantly present 9 years ago, and the fine illustrations in the Third (as well as this) can't be much improved by animation. The requests for "internalization" of brain images were not really changed in this edition, and the online material is updated, but the third's online is/was so good, as well as the CD for you auditory folk, that it was a hard act to follow.

Unlike many rushed out "new" editions, there IS significant work put into this new edition; it is not a scam like many other texts that rip us off every other year with "new." However, if you're reading it for self study, or even to augment a class with another primary text, the third should definitely be considered given the price difference. I write here for readers on a budget like me, if money is no object, I'd get this book over the third in a heartbeat, just for some of the web extras and some of the newer illustrations.

My two main interests, intelligence and pharmacokinetics of the brain, weren't expanded much between the two, so consider my biases in this regard also. I don't really get the publishers "DNA sequencing" comments, because most of the molecular presentation is very similar, and the new web references to newer research is, well, on the web! Again, if money is not a consideration, the new web material and citations ARE great, more up to date, and worth it. The real issue is that both of these fine editions are treasured NOT for their research depth but for their readability, and you can't improve much on that with the fine third.

For reference, I'm a roboticist and a member of the NENGO team in neural research. I use the third edition of this text in online neuro classes, then specific other texts in areas this introduces. IF YOU TEACH I will guarantee you one thing for sure: your students will LOVE you for EITHER edition of this text, as it is one of the most well written, enjoyable books in ANY field. It's like Bob Spetzler meets John Grisham, a real page turner. How many texts can you honestly say that about? Enjoy!

Superb textbook!

This is an excellent textbook! It is actually a pleasure to read. I have read (or attempted to read) other neuroscience textbooks, but have found them boring and at times confusing. This book is neither, though it contains more detailed and in depth information than the other texts did. The authors have written a text that makes complex material easily understandable. The text is enhanced by what the authors describe as "special interest" boxes "designed to illuminate the relevance of the material to the students' everyday lives", "brain food" boxes that contain more advanced material for students who want to understand the material in more depth than might be presented in an introductory course, and "path of discovery" boxes, which provide fascinating histories of how the discoveries were made and make the text more relevant and meaningful. There are also figures illustrating the material throughout
the text.

Learning from this textbook has been easy because it has been based on understanding, whereas with other texts I struggled with memorizing what felt like disparate facts (at least to me). It could be that this is because I came to this textbook with some rudimentary knowledge that I did not have when approaching some of the other texts, but I don't think so. I think that learning has been so much
easier because of the way the authors have presented the material. It almost reads like a mystery novel.
I picked this book up two days ago and have had trouble pulling myself away from it. This is the best neuroscience textbook I have ever encountered. Many thanks to the authors!

I am a raving fan of Roger von Oech's creative work as embodied in his books & card decks, namely:

- Ancient Whacks of Heraclitus;

I have used all his creativity stuff ever since I started my own strategy consulting (& book store) business in late 1991.

From my personal & professional experience, I would like to say that the entire collection of Roger von Oech's creative work has been designed to serve three strategic purposes:

- understanding - & removing - your mental blocks;
- breaking your habitual patterns;
- shifting your focus & changing your paradigms;

As a matter of fact, once you appreciate & commit to these three strategic purposes in your life, you will soon realise that there is nothing in this world to stop you from getting rid of old ideas & getting new & fresh ideas.

Allow me to quote Edward de Bono: "...the mind is habitually uncreative - it is usually preoccupied with organising masses of incoming data into convenient patterns. Once this pattern is established, then the mind tends to rely upon that pattern in future situations, in order to facilitate decision making & action in an otherwise complex world..." (The Use of Lateral Thinking).

Breaking old habitual patterns is definitely the first & foremost priority in your journey to creativity!

Once your shift your focus, you begin to change your paradigms or the way you look at the world around you. Always remember this: Your brain follows the direction of your dominant thought. Once you focus on something, that thing becomes the foreground. Everything else around it will fall into the background. Most opportunties are unfortunately hidden in the background. The moment you begin to shift your focus, you are pushing the 'foreground' into the 'background', & pulling the 'background' into the 'foreground'. Get it?

I think everyone should have a pack of this cards because everyone sometimes feels stuck with a problem to the point that he is unaware of other possible solutions. The ideas in this pack help to look at the perplexing issue from many different perspectives. Sooner or later one may see the light, an open door, most likely many, many doors leading to numerous possible solutions. These cards are a valuable tool for brainstorming ideas, prompting the person to think of ideas that might have never crossed his mind otherwise. The wonderful think about coming out with creative ideas is that you also have lots of laughs while you're doing it because you begin to think of wild, whacky and outrageously fun things.

About the Author

Emma Brennan trained as a broadcast journalist and worked for the BBC and independent radio, as a newsreader, researcher and reporter. She has written features for both newspapers and magazines on everything from current news to health issues, and of course fashion! In 1992, alongside freelance writing, she started her own business, Charlie's Aunt, designing and producing handmade ‘vintage inspired’ clothing and hats. She is a qualified further education tutor and has taught courses in handbag, accessory and jewellery design. small clutches

I make and sell bags to supplement my fabric habit and am always picking up a few books. The front cover appealed to me so I purchased this book. All these bags are just a front and back of fabric sewn together. Other than the outside of the bags decorations, all these bags are just a front and back sewn together. If you are looking for a small evening bag to carry a lipstick and maybe a small walet or cell phone then this book might be right for you. If you need a functional purse with pockets and places for keys, pens, etc keep looking for another book. Luckly I got a good deal on this book so not out to much money

The book to have if you only have one

I have been making handbags and totes for years, and own many, many books and patterns on the subject, but I still learned new things from this book. It would be the one resource I would have if I could only have one. From the tools and techniques in this book, you could go on to make any kind of handbag. Curiously, I didn't buy this when it first came out because I don't like the looks of the bag on the cover. It's my least favorite looking bag in the book, but the exterior looks really don't matter--from what is learned by using this book, you will be able to create any look you desire.

Fun & Fabulous Bags!

Although I have not yet made one of these bags, I have read through much of the book, scrutinized the understandability of the techniques explained, and perused the patterns at the back of the book. I have found it to be an excellent book for someone who is a fairly experienced sewer, as I am. If you are a beginner, this might not be the book for you unless you have someone who can help. Overall, I am extremely impressed with this book, the illustrations in the techniques section, the variety of purses offered, and the chance to learn new techniques in sewing (since I have not yet made any purses, just clothing and quilts). If you are an experienced sewer and interested in making vintage purses/bags, you can't go wrong with this book!

There are a few good exercises in the beginning of the book

Yet another "How to Draw an Owl" book, meaning step 1 draw an oval, step two draw the rest of the owl. There are a few good exercises in the beginning of the book, then it forgets that it's teaching and just starts showcasing artists' sweeping, detailed landscapes without any instruction. The rest of the book wastes space/adds pages by talking about different mediums. So if you don't know what watercolors or pencils are, yet have a gift from god for designing rich, detailed landscapes, this is the book for you.

Gave me what I expected and more

I've given this book a 4 out of 5 not because I'm not entirely satisfied with it but because it's not exactly a "must have" book. It helps with, pretty much, what the title says, "Drawing and Painting Landscapes and Cityscapes". The book doesn't go in depth to teaching you step by step and stroke by stroke how to draw landscapes and cityscapes but what it does do I found helpful and excellent.

The book begins in touching on basics art basics such as colour, moods, perspective, size, space, etc. Obviously it won't go in depth with these things because that's not the type of book it is nor is it this book's intention. Then, the book spends a good set of pages discussing different elements like weather, snow, trees, whatever. It points out things that some people often take for granted. After this section, the book discusses main aspects of 12 different types of land/city scapes. This, I found extremely helpful as it gives you an idea of how to use reference images and photos. After all, environment design and landscape/cityscape drawing is very much a reference-based practice. Environment designers usually have a set of 10 to 20 photos around their actual canvas and then pick out features they find helpful in some, if not all, of those photos.

I bought this book wanting hints and tips regarding landscape design. What I got was a little more. I was expecting to use this book simply for ideas. What I got was a touch up on 12 different types of landscapes, cityscapes, icescapes, seascapes, and what to look out for in each. It definitely gets your mind and vision working together so that your environment works out as a whole picture rather than having separate aspects of your environment contradicting each other. One example is having a storm in the background with a plain standing tree on a hill. The remark made is that the tree should be leaning with the storm [in that example it was leaning to the right]. This is something we take for granted. Surely, a storm will effect everything in its way. The problem is, when some artists draw environments, they often separate the environment and, although it may look fine at first glance, if one was to study the artwork it would become apparent that there are some crucial laws of motion that were disregarded by the artist. Before long, the environment becomes a pain to the trained eye.

This books points out these sorts of things and more. If you're wanting to do environment design and just paint landscapes on any medium [drawings, paintings, digital, etc], I recommend this book. It's not a must have but definitely worth mentioning and having a look at. I bought it and don't regret it at all. In fact, I'm glad I bought it.

Drawing & Painting Fantasy Landscapes

I like this book, it explains procedures in a short manner which could be understood by a beginner, however, I found one big mistake on page 17.
"RGB: This emulates the way in which light of the three primary colors (Red, 'Green' and Blue) can be combined to produce any other color."
"Green" is not a primary color, it is a "Secondary" color made by mixing Blue and Yellow. All and every color ever used are made from the 3 Primary Colors: Red, Yellow and Blue. They are called "Primary" because they cannot be made by "mixing" other colors. If you purchase this book please make note of this and correct it. I gave this 4 Stars because of the mistake and will look for others as I read more.

Unpredictable and Exciting

After the first installment of The Silverleaf Chronicles, I thought I knew where the story was going. I was wrong. Vincent Trigili switched up the narrative and threw the reader 15 years into the future after the first excellent episode of Silverleaf...a bold move that paid off.

After adjusting to the time jump, we find ourselves back in Silverleaf's shoes. He doesn't remember anything before 10 years previous, so to him, the events of the first book are a long-forgotten dream. Fortunately for us, Silverleaf is thriving as he comes to terms with the animal side of himself and his journey takes him across Kaylissa's path one more time.

In the end, we see a lot more hints dropped abut future installments and where our characters ate headed, making me eager to devour what comes next. I really enjoyed this episode and read it in one sitting.

I want more Silverleaf!

Amazingly well written! Vincent really makes his characters come alive and paints a wonderful background. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for each installment!

As my review stated for the first Silverleaf Episode, this is very short. These are episodes, not the complete novel. If you want that, wait until all of the episodes are released and are available as a book. Do not leave negative reviews just because it is short.

Worth the Wait

After reading Wanderer, the first book in the Silverleaf Chronicles, it was hard to wait for the next episode, Awakening to be released. But the wait was worth it! The story picks up several years later which is at first confusing. Neither Silverleaf nor the reader knows what has happened in the intervening years. But as the story unfolds things become clear.
Awakening is extremely well written and the characters are fully developed. As a reader I developed an empathy for the two main characters. I wanted to cheer for them at each encounter with "the bad guys."
The hardest thing about these Chronicles is that they come in small chunks. Now that I have finished reading Awakening I am anxiously looking forward to the next episode's release.
