The best book I have ever read on the U.S. Navy SEALs and their fantastic leadership philosophy. I loved it.
By Joseph J. Truncale
As a researcher and writer I have read and reviewed numerous books on the U.S. Navy SEALs, including Lone Survivor, American Sniper and many, many others. I have also read many books on leadership principles. This fantastic book (First, Fast, Fearless: How to lead like a Navy SEAL by Retired LT. Commander Brian “Iron Ed” Hiner) is the absolute best book on NAVY SEAL leadership I have ever read. In fact, it would not surprise me if this book made it to the New York Times Best Seller list when it officially comes out. In my opinion this book is that good.
As someone who has served in the U.S. Navy many years ago, I have always honored and respected this elite group of warriors. I have made it my business over the years to read as much as possible about the U.S. Navy SEALs. This interesting and informative book covers specific areas of leadership I have not read about in other similar books. The author explains in clear and concise terms the philosophy, principles and ethics which make the Navy SEALS unique and special. One of the many things I love about this book is how each chapter focuses on a particular aspect of SEAL leadership and gives a summary at the end called “Bullets.”
This wonderful book is organized into three parts with nineteen chapters. The introduction covers “becoming a leader of leaders.” The first part “Do your part first: the brand of a true leader” has eight chapters. The second part “Running to the sound of gunfire: The essence of brotherhood” has six chapters. The final part “Battle rhythm: turning brand and brotherhood into music” have five chapters. I really loved the appendix section because it has the “First, Fast, Fearless Leadership Maxims.
A very small sample of my favorite maxims that I love and have followed: “A mercenary does a job because he’s paid to. A soldier does his because he’s ordered to. A warrior does his because he wants to.” “One’s training is never complete.” “A first strike mindset is the path to action. Action is the antidote to stress and fear.” In my opinion, the maxims alone are worth the price of the book but you should really read and study each of the chapters carefully to fully appreciate this fantastic book. As we all know, "The devil is in the details" and this book is filled with essential details of true leadership.
This short review cannot do this book justice. This is not just a book about how to incorporate SEAL leadership principles to business, but it is a book for anyone who desires to live their lives like true warriors and patriotic American citizens.
Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

Amazingly I came out of this book a lot smarter than when I went in. I’m already putting some of what I’ve learned to work.
By Bold Consumer
I had to ask myself in the beginning why I would be interested in a book written by a Navy SEAL. I was pleasantly surprised. The book reminds me of a very excellent Executive Management Retreat, very much worth my time. I’ve already used some of what I’ve learned.
The author starts with the history and organization of the Navy SEALS, in great detail. Since that’s not a goal of mine, I read that part quickly and got on to the part that would help me as CEO of an already successful business.
The chapters start with an example from a military experience. While I wouldn’t have thought it would be especially interesting, not being a military person, it was a very helpful addition to the text.
The ‘training manual’ then goes on to the Leader as Moralist, the Leader as Jurist, the Leader as Teacher, Steward, and finally Philosopher.
One of my favorite famous quotes used in the book was “When your opponent is hurrying recklessly, you must act contrarily and keep calm. You must not be influenced by the opponent---Miyamoto Musashi.
We learn how to be ‘present’ in times of stress: “Leaders present in times of stress are far more valued than ones who stop by once in a while when things are going well.” Topics include ‘risk’ in how things get done, how stress, fear, and negative energy are overcome. I enjoyed the point of how to “make things happen, not to let them happen to you---to be the cause, not the effect.” That’s in the “Adopting a First Strike Mindset" section.
Amazingly I came out of this book a lot smarter than when I went in. I’m already putting some of what I’ve learned to work for me. My poor book, however, hasn’t survived the process very well. It is covered with highlighters and notes, a sign that tells me I really liked a book.

Leadership Seal Style.
By Rawim
I have always had a high amount of respect and a little bit of fascination with the United States Special Forces. Men who are arguably the best in the world at what they do have to work together in a close knit teams in extremely high stress and high pressure situations, how do they do it? Well this book gives you a history of the Seals, how Seals are selected and trained and then covers the general leadership structure and style of the Seals organization. The chapters are well organized each focusing on a particular topic. There are lots of organization in lists or acronyms, and the ideas are often supported by history, research or anecdotes. And one of the things I like the best is that each chapter ends in bullet points. I wish more books were laid out like this one. Everything here makes sense, and while I am not currently in a leadership role at my place of employment, I gathered a lot of great ideas form this book that have actually changed the way I approach my job.
Overall an easy to read, well laid out book, that can be of great value to anyone in a leadership position, male or female, highly recommended.
